Just testing Blog this feature of Picasa

I dont use Picasa very much.
It has lots of useful features, so it could be worth my while
to learn more about it, and or take advantage of the functions.

This post is an example of just clicking on photos in an album on my computer and from the Create dropdown menu, choosing Blog this.
The photos were taken a few weeks ago, and are of birds feeding in the wee pond out back of my house here in Florida.

I imagine that most folks who have a Blogger account also have Picasa on their computers.  Dont know why I havent used this feature in the past, it sure does making posting lots of photos pretty easy and quick to do.

For anyone who hasnt yet downloaded the Free utility of Picasa, what are you waiting for??

Just the Hare Necessities

Just the Hare Necessities

Coming up to the end of the year is often the time to try and reduce the usual processing backlog and get the years images wrapped up and finally backed up. So my first task was to go through some brown hare photos from the summer that have been left gathering dust on the hard drives.
I spent quite a bit of time with the hares again this year, an animal of which I can never tire. Its always such a pleasure being in their presence but I cannot quite put my finger on the attraction of hares for me. I mean I have obviously seen a large number of rabbits over the years but taken relatively few photographs but put a hare in front of me and the hours just seem to drift away. They certainly have mesmerizing glassy eyes that reflect that surrounding landscape.
Keeping those feet clean.
A warm summer evening spent lying down on the ground close to hare is such a wonderful experience and all of lifes pressure and stress fade to nothing in the background. To use a versus from a song in the Jungle Book film but substituting bare with hare and you get the following which I think sums it up well.

Look for the hare necessities
The simple hare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the hare necessities
Thats why a hare can rest at ease
With just the hare necessities of life

May be I have just spent too long with hares !!

Anyway on to some photographs. The summer brown hare is a very relaxed animal they still breed throughout the summer with the occasional crazed boxing bouts but most of the time seems to be spent feeding and building up fat reserves to see them through the hard times in the coming winter months. This makes these shy cautious animals much easier to approach.

Hares eyesight is geared up to detect movement. If you sit still enough they can sometimes walk right up to you, apparently completely oblivious to your presence. Some of you may remember a couple of years back when I told you of a hare that walked up to me whilst sat in a hedgerow and started licking my boot, presumably for some residual salt left on it from a beach wader photography session.
If you need to approach them then crawling flat is the way to go as they, together with many animals, associate the upright human form with danger. At times you will be surprised how close you can get to a hare. The tricky part is often leaving without disturbing it as crawling very slowly backwards with a heavy camera is not the easiest movement to make. However, the goal with all wildlife photography should be not to disturb or stress your subject. I see many people having got their photos then forgetting about their subject, standing up and sending whatever they were photographing speeding off to the horizon.  My view is you should back away as carefully as you approached.
With the brown hares now quiet my thoughts are rapidly turning to photographing mountain hares given that they will be well in to taking on their white winter coats. It is all dependent on the weather which is never to be taken lightly in their habitat.

Just what I needed today

Just what I needed today

"Waiting on Me means directing your attention to Me in hopeful anticipation of what I will do.  It entails trusting Me with every fiber of your being, instead of trying to figure things out yourself.  Waiting on Me is the way I designed you to live: all day, every day.  I created you to stay conscious of Me as you go about your daily duties.
I have promised many blessings to those who wait on Me: renewed strength, living above ones circumstances, resurgence of hope, awareness of My continual Presence.  Waiting on Me enables you to glorify Me by living in deep dependence on Me, ready to do My will.  It also helps you to enjoy Me; in My Presence is fullness of joy."

Just add people

Just add people

If I had to pigeon-hole myself, Id say that Im a landscape photographer - even though I shoot weddings as part of my business.

While I really enjoy shooting weddings - love it, in fact (despite the stress and worry over the weather etc) - I also resisted it for the longest time because, at my core, Im a bit of a loaner. I much prefer getting away from people, rather than seeking large groups of them out. Growing up I would have said that I was shy, although that shyness has certainly decreased the older I get. But I still dont like large groups of people. They make me nervous.

So, not surprisingly, when I wanted to start taking photography seriously, I gravitated towards the more lone pursuit of the landscape. All of my exhibitions have been on the landscape, and most of the framed prints in the house are (with the exception of family photos of course) landscapes. All of which is a long-winded way of saying "Im a landscape kinda guy".

Driftwood. Canon 20D + EF-S 18-55mm IS @ f8
Where am I going with this? Well, this weekend we went for an afternoon walk along a local beach, and of course I took my camera. It was the middle of the afternoon, so I never expect to get amazing photos - but then again, you never know, right?

While walking along the beach we came across some pretty cool driftwood. Whenever I spot a photo opportunity - even when Im with the family - I get into the zone and start approaching the scene as I would if I was out taking landscapes on my own. So I tell the kids "stay out of the frame - dont get in the shot" - basically "leave me alone, Im taking a photo". Yeah, not very nice, I know. Although in my defense, I never take very long at these moments, and the kids do have the whole rest of the beach to play on... just not in my spot for a few minutes. Usually Ill end up taking a few of the kids playing in the same spot once Ive finished as well - and thats what I did this weekend. I took my arty landscape shots, and then some more family friendly snapshots afterwards.

Driftwood and family. Canon 20D + EF-S 18-55mm IS
When I got home and looked through the downloaded images from the day I was pretty happy with some of the photos, despite the harsh mid afternoon sun. The clouds were pretty cool, and the driftwood quite dramatic - although I dont think I got anything portfolio worthy.

Maybe it was the time of day, or maybe it was my mindset when I took them, but the more I looked at the images, the more I felt myself drawn to the ones that had people in them, and the less interested I was in the arty lone-landscape images. Upon reflection, the more I think about it, the more I realise this to be the case in the images that I find the most compelling - theres some human element there that makes the landscape more personal, more interesting and more intimate.

I purchased two photography books recently - both large books of landscapes taken on medium format. As impressive as the large landscape images were, I found myself simply flicking through the books very quickly, and then putting them down - somewhat dissatisfied (and if Im really truthful downright disappointed) by the experience. The few images that really held my attention for more than a couple of seconds were those that contained at least some reference to the human (a sign, abandoned building, small figure) and Im finding this increasingly relevant to my own photography.

Does that mean that I will never go out on my own again and make pure landscape images? No - absolutely not. Maybe thats the challenge of taking landscapes that hold no human content?

Or maybe it means that we come to an image wanting to relate to it in some way - even if its a small way - in human terms. A road, a hut, a footprint, a bridge - anything that connects our humaneness to the landscape?

What I do know, when looking back through my image library, is that I respond more to an image when it has a human element to it - and thats good enough for me.

Just How Good Are Those Knock Offs

Just How Good Are Those Knock Offs

-By Dan dos Santos

China is a manufacturing super power. They can produce just about anything in massive quantities, and at a cost few other countries can compete with. As a result, the country is ripe with opportunities to manufacture anything thats desirable at the moment. This happens to include illegal things as well, like replicas of brand name items such as iPhones or designer handbags. This is often referred to as the Grey Market.

Its worth noting that these knockoffs are often produced by the exact same manufacturer (and likely often times the exact same individuals), meaning little difference in quality or material. Thats not always the case, of course. Obviously cost plays a role in quality, meaning there are good knock offs and bad knock offs... but I have seen some surprisingly good knock offs before.

Ive always been curious to know if this extends to their imitation paintings as well.

Im sure that you have all seen websites where you can buy REAL oil paintings of famous images for just a few dollars. In fact, Ive seen websites where I could buy illegal replicas of MY OWN artwork more times than I can count.

At first, you take insult to it. But after its happened enough times, you really just dont care anymore. Theres not enough money being made, or lost, to make it worth my time to bother with it. Trust me, no one is getting rich making copies of my work.

But it made me wonder.... Just how good are these copies?
Can these guys paint better than me?
If they were really good, or even just pretty good, could I have them replicate my digital preliminaries, into real underpaintings that I could then later finish?
Could I have them turn my digital paintings into real oil paintings for me?
Could I outsource my art?!

I came to the conclusion that I dont want to do ANY of those things, even if I could. But I was still curious about the quality of these paintings.

So... In the spirit of professional curiosity, I took it upon myself to buy one.

I didnt want to use my own art for this experiment. So I decided to buy a replica of a classical painting, from someone who is dead. In this case, I chose this incredible painting by the Hungarian artist Maria Szantho (1897-1997).

The description was VERY specific about this being a real oil painting, crafted 100% by Hand. But I figured it was quite likely that these might be digital giclees with just a little oil embellishment. So
just in case, I decided to contact the seller anyways, and make sure of it. He assured me they were indeed real paintings.

I went ahead and purchased it. The painting arrived rolled in a tube about 20 days later.

As I began to unroll it, the first thing I noticed was that the painting wasnt painted on normal cotton canvas. It is painted on some sort of synthetic canvas, likely a polyester or vinyl. It is extremely shiny and grey in color.

Cotton canvas at top, synthetic canvas at bottom.

The paintings surface was covered in a thin plastic wrap, which I easily peeled away. As I did, I was immediately overwhelmed by the noxious smell of the painting. And mind you, I literally sit a turpentine riddled studio all day. This smell was intense. I actually had to bring it out into the garage. I suspect the artists are using some pretty strong solvents to make sure these oil paints dry in time for shipping. Likely a commercial grade paint stripper.

I also suspect they are not using the same type of artist grade oil paints we would use. The paint itself smells more like sign painting oils. If any of our readers are familiar with quick drying oil enamels like 1-shot, it smells very much like that.

As for the actual painting... To be honest, my first impression of the painting really wasnt that bad. Perhaps a non-artist might not notice the differences? But I was looking for those subtle passages that made the original so beautiful to me, like the fingers, the toes, and the way the face falls into warm shadow. Sadly, those were the exact areas where the painting really fell flat. In general, the form of the figure really lacked the sense of light and shadow that the original possesses. It also seems to be lacking the intense highlights that brought a sense of texture to the skin. All of the flesh seems to be rendered rather monochromatically.

Youll also note in the photos above this bizarre striping in the image. This is from rippling in the canvas. The material is so reflective however, that it causes an optical illusion of sorts, and makes it look like the surface is dirty. These ripples are appearing more and more as the painting is exposed to air. Its possible that as the oils dry, they are tightening on the surface, and drawing the canvas inward, causing the ripples.

You can definitely tell that whomever painted this image (and it may have been more than one person) had some training, but they really are a novice at best. I overlapped the two paintings, and the drawing seems to be quite accurate, implying a level of skill that the painting execution does not. I would guess that the original image was projected on the canvas to do the drawing.

So overall... I would say that the painting is a reasonable facsimile if what youre looking for is to decorate your bathroom or something and you dont live in a house full of artists.

But as for anything that could be of any professional interest, I think its pretty useless.
